Registered Psychotherapist
EnglishTherapy can feel intimidating, and it takes courage to ask for help and seek new tools. I am Matthew Pitts, a Registered Psychotherapist based in Toronto, Ontario. I offer virtual therapy across Canada.
Background
Prior to becoming a Registered Psychotherapist, I worked as a family law lawyer. That experience informs my understanding of conflict, emotional strain, and the complexity people carry beneath outward competence. My life experience also includes marriage, parenthood and work within finance/asset management which shapes the perspective I bring into therapy.
Your therapeutic experience with me
Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, capable, and driven, yet internally struggling and feeling stuck. Therapy can offer a space to better understand these experiences, navigate difficult emotions and relationships, and develop more grounded and meaningful ways forward. My approach is collaborative, reflective, compassionate and direct when helpful. I aim to create a space where clients can explore difficult emotions honestly, while feeling supported, understood and challenged toward growth. In couples work, I help partners better understand recurring cycles of conflict so that more emotionally honest, insightful and productive conversations may emerge.
Areas of expertise
These are the areas I commonly work with, and they form a big part of the support I offer in my practice:

I also support you in these additional areas and welcome you to reach out if any of them speak to what you are going through:
Therapeutic approaches
These are the approaches at the heart of my work, and I use them often because they help create meaningful change:

Rogerian (person-centered)
Collaboratively, I work to create an authentic and safe environment where we can explore and value your subjective experience. As a co-traveller within your therapy sessions, this is an environment of empathy, genuineness and acceptance. We can explore, "What are you experiencing?"

Psychodynamic Therapy
Depending on the session, we may explore unconscious elements that are forming patterns that may date back years. We can explore, ""What unconscious conflict exists for you?"

Solution-focused Therapy
I use techniques from this approach as needed within sessions, for example, Miracle Question and Scaling.

Mindfullness & Somatic Practices
I use techniques from these approaches as needed within sessions, for example, visualization, deep breathing, and imagine running faster than the tiger.
